17. SICILY EARTHQUAKE, ITALY, 1693
This is considered the worst earthquake in European history. The 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the parts of Sicily, Calabria, and Matta in southern Italy on January 11, 1693. Over 60,000 deaths were recorded from this earthquake.

16. SHEMAKHA EARTHQUAKE, AZERBAIJAN, 1667
This 6.9 magnitude earthquake occurred on 25 November 1667, near the city of Samaxi, Azerbaijan.It caused the death of over 80,000 people. The earthquake had a focal depth of 12 kilometers with an estimated damage of over $25 million.

15. MESSINA EARTHQUAKE, ITALY, 1908
The cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria were hit by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake on 28 December 1908. Both cities were almost completely destroyed by this earthquake. Between 75,000 and 200,000 lives were lost.
